Anxious People

Rating: 4.5/5

My first book by Fredrik Backman and definitely not my last. It was a very funny read. What I loved most about this book is that in the midst of COVID-19 and social movements, it is beautiful to see people learn about each other and stand by one another. Even though it was idiotic in a way, it was heartwarming to see.

The main story really begins with what is supposed to bank robbery that somehow turns into a hostage situation at an apartment viewing. Through multiple POV’s of the bank robber, hostages (who are sometimes referred to as idiots), and detectives, we gain insight into what factors led each of these people to this specific moment today. We see that what we perceive is not always what actually is. There are many characters but Backman does a fantastic job of giving each character it’s own personality and voice. I found myself loving some characters immediately, rooting for the development of others, and empathizing for some I did not expect to. It’s very difficult to review this book without revealing too much so I’ll just say this is one you will definitely enjoy.

So, this book is about a bank robbery. Or maybe a hostage. Or, is it really about a man and bridge. Or maybe we can sum it up to a group full of idiots. But aren't we all idiots in a way? Whatever it's about, Backman beautifully intertwines the stories of individuals where there is more than meets the eye. The character development at the different stages of their lives is amazing. This book will keep you guessing until nearly the end and I thoroughly enjoyed the humorous ride.
